Scenic Drive from Waipunga Falls to Napier
The drive from Waipunga Falls to Napier along State Highway 5 is particularly scenic. This route follows the Waipunga River, with the Ahimanawa Range rising prominently to the southwest.
The highway is particularly striking here due to the pyramid-like peaks on the northeast side, which remain unnamed, and are covered in regenerating native forest. This section of SH5 is the most visually engaging part of the drive, though there are limited opportunities to stop and fully appreciate the scenery.
Transitioning into Hawke's Bay
As you leave the Waipunga River, you'll enter the expansive region of Hawke's Bay. The landscape transforms into a patchwork of farms, a large exotic forest, and numerous vineyards. From there, continue south to Napier on State Highway 2, or head north towards Wairoa.
