The Arts Centre Te Matatiki Toi Ora in Christchurch
Located in the heart of Christchurch, the Arts Centre Te Matatiki Toi Ora is a vibrant hub for arts, culture, education, and entrepreneurship. Situated in the historic former Canterbury College buildings, now part of the University of Canterbury, the centre is bordered by Hereford Street to the south, Worcester Boulevard to the north, and Rolleston Avenue to the west. The Christchurch Botanic Gardens are located just across Rolleston Avenue, and the tram stops right beside the centre on Worcester Boulevard.
A Heritage Landmark
The Arts Centre is a national landmark, boasting New Zealand's largest collection of category-one heritage buildings. Of the 23 buildings on site, 21 are listed by Heritage New Zealand. All were designed by Benjamin Mountfort, a key figure in bringing the Gothic revival architectural style to Christchurch. Mountfort, who arrived in Lyttelton in 1850 aboard the Charlotte Jane, was instrumental in shaping the city's architectural landscape, particularly its churches and public buildings.
Restoration and Revitalisation
The 2011 earthquake caused significant damage to the Arts Centre, prompting an extensive restoration project. With an estimated cost of $290 million, this effort is one of the world's largest heritage restoration initiatives. Most buildings have now reopened to the public, although some repairs are still ongoing.
In 2017, the University of Canterbury returned to the site, relocating two departments to the restored old Chemistry Building. The centre also houses the Teece Museum of Classical Antiquities, which features the James Logie Memorial Collection of Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and Near Eastern artefacts. Additionally, the Observatory on Hereford Street has been transformed into a boutique hotel.
Exploring the Precinct
A stroll through the Arts Centre precinct and along its surrounding streets is a delightful experience. Saturdays are particularly lively, with a market held on Worcester Boulevard. After exploring the centre, you can easily walk to nearby attractions such as the Avon River / Ōtākaro, the Art Gallery, the Botanic Gardens, and Ravenscar House.
