Exploring Beacon Point in Wānaka

Beacon Point is situated at the end of Beacon Point Road in Wānaka. This area features two small bays, each providing unique views and experiences. The first bay, facing west, has a sandy beach and a public toilet. The second bay, facing northwest, is slightly further along the road.

In Summer, these bays are perfect for swimming, while throughout the year, they offer breathtaking views across Lake Wānaka and the lake outlet to the Clutha River / Mata-Au. On clear days, the sight of storms forming over the mountains to the northwest is particularly striking.

Scenic Walks and Natural Beauty

While there is no formal track around Beacon Point, you can enjoy a scenic walk along the lakeside from the Outlet Track. This easy, 1 km walk begins at the first bay and is highly photogenic. The area is mostly native bush, primarily kānuka and mānuka, interspersed with deciduous exotic trees. Alongside the sandy beaches, you'll find rocky and grassed sections, some featuring pools that mirror the surrounding mountains.

On your return journey, look for a track to the left of the road leading to a small restored wetland, a delightful surprise.

Connecting Tracks and Te Araroa

Beacon Point is a junction for the Outlet Track, which follows the south bank of the Clutha River / Mata-Au, and the Beacon Point Walk, which heads south along the lake towards the town centre. Both tracks are part of Te Araroa.

How to Get to Beacon Point

To reach Beacon Point, drive to the end of Beacon Point Road from central Wānaka. Parking is available beside the beach at the first bay.

In addition to Beacon Point, Wānaka offers many other walking options, including Mt Iron, a walk along the Wānaka Lakefront to that Wānaka Tree, and the Glendhu Bay Track.
