Exploring Te Henga Walkway to O'Neill Bay
Located in the Waitākere Ranges, the Te Henga Walkway offers a scenic journey through diverse landscapes, leading to the beautiful O'Neill Bay. This track is especially appealing in spring and early summer when native flora is in bloom, providing a vibrant backdrop to your walk.
Track Description
The walk begins at the car park for the Lake Wainamu Track, situated just over a kilometre before the Bethells Beach car park on Bethells Road. From here, a short bridge crosses the Waitākere River, leading you through farmland beneath Taumaiti, a prominent hill to the north. The track ascends 80 metres up the hillside, offering a viewpoint over Te Henga and the river. After a brief section of forest regrowth, the path opens up above Waitākere Bay, providing views north towards O'Neill Bay. The track descends to the dunes behind O'Neill Bay, with a short detour onto the beach.
How to Get There
To reach the start of the Te Henga Walkway, drive along Bethells Road towards Te Henga. The car park for the Lake Wainamu Track is on the left, a little over one kilometre before the beach car park. Look to the right for a turnoff that leads to the accessway for the Te Henga Walkway and O'Neill Bay. You can drive to the end of this accessway.
