Exploring Blackball: A West Coast Historic Gem

Located near the Grey River / Māwheranui on the West Coast of the South Island, Blackball is a small town that has managed to thrive while many other rural ex-mining towns have faded. It wears its history proudly and serves as an endpoint for the Paparoa Track, a New Zealand Great Walk, popular for both hiking and cycling.

A Town with Character and History

Blackball's charm is partly due to its larger than life stories and history. It was established in the late 1800s as a coal mining settlement, to exploit coal found in the Papmoa Range. The town grew around the Blackball Coal Mine, which began operations in the 1890s. Its name is believed to have derived from the Black Ball Shipping Line, a British company that operated in colonial New Zealand.

In the late 1900s, the Blackball Hotel, then named the Hilton, gained notoriety when the global hotel chain threatened legal action over its name. This incident brought attention to the town, proving that all publicity is good publicity. The hotel remains a must-visit destination on the West Coast.

The town also holds historical significance, with a small outdoor museum that highlights its role in the development of New Zealand's labour movement and the Labour Party in the early 1900s. This museum provides insight into Blackball's past and its contribution to the country's social history, often in response to the dangers of working in the nearby coalmines.

Art and Culture in Blackball

Adding to Blackball's appeal is the vibrant wall art surrounding the town swimming pool. This artistic touch adds a unique flair to the town, making it stand out among other small communities. The combination of history, art, and local culture makes Blackball a fascinating place to explore.

For those who enjoy culinary delights, the local salami maker is a must-visit, with superb products for meat lovers.

How to Get to Blackball

To reach Blackball from Greymouth, take Taylorville Road from the north side of the Grey River. At Taylorville, the road becomes Taylorville Road and continues to Blackball. The drive takes 23 minutes and is 25 km. From Reefton, take State Highway 7 southwest to Ikahamatua, then cross the Grey River and take Atarau Road to Blacball.

Nearby, you can take a short walk on the Paparoa Track and visit other historic mining locations in the region, such as Waiuta, Brunner Mine and Pike River Mine, all sites of mine disasters. For a less testing experience, drive to Moana / Lake Brunner for a forest walk and lakeside beach.
