Discover the Forest Pools in Puketi Forest
Located on the southern edge of Puketi Forest in Northland, the Forest Pools are swimmable pools in the Waipapa River. This peaceful spot is easily accessible from State Highway 1 via Forest Road, approximately 10 km northwest of Ōkaihau. The area is ideal for a refreshing swim and a relaxing picnic, with a grassy area opposite the toilet facilities providing a perfect picnic spot.
Enjoy a Swim and a Scenic Walk
The Forest Pools offer a delightful break during your travels in the region. A road leads directly to a car park, from which a short walk takes you to a large gravel beach beside the river and pools. Swimming here is both safe and popular. If the area is crowded, you can explore quieter spots by walking along the river in either direction. Heading east will take you around a bend and into the forest, while going southwest leads towards farmland.
Explore the Lower Waipapa River Track
For those interested in tramping, the Lower Waipapa River Track begins at the end of the car park. This track follows the river north into the forest and connects with the Pukatea Ridge Track, part of Te Araroa. The journey from the pools to the northeast end of the Puketui Forest near Waiare Road takes about two days.
Getting to the Forest Pools
To reach the Forest Pools, drive along State Highway 1, 10 km northwest of Ōkaihau, to the Forest Road turnoff. This gravel road leads directly to a car park, a few metres from the river and pools.
Other places to visit in Puketi Forest are the Puketi Forest Nature Trail and the Manginangina Kauri Walk.
