Giant Pōhutukawa

Discovering Auckland's Largest Pōhutukawa Tree

Located in Dove-Myer Robinson Park, also known as the Parnell Rose Gardens, the giant pōhutukawa tree is a remarkable natural feature in Auckland. Reputed by some to be the second-largest pōhutukawa in New Zealand, as well as the largest in Auckland, this tree is a sight to behold. From the outside, it resembles a small forest, but stepping into its surrounding foliage reveals its true scale. The tree's vastness is highlighted by its multiple large branches that arch from the centre, meet the ground, and then rise again into smaller branches.

Historical Background and Origins

The exact origins of this pōhutukawa tree are somewhat mysterious, with limited evidence. It is believed to have been planted between 1850 and 1860, though it might have existed before European settlement in Auckland. Several individuals are considered possible planters, including William Swainson, Robert Gillies, and Sir John Logan Campbell.

Campbell is the most likely candidate, as he built a house named Kilbryde just west of the tree's location and is known to have planted several trees in the area. Paintings from the 1880s and 1917 depict a substantial tree in the correct location, supporting this theory.

Preservation and Challenges

The tree has survived significant changes in its surroundings. The demolition of Kilbryde and the removal of part of the cliff to the north for a railway line through Judges Bay and Hobson Bay did not affect it. However, in the early 2020s, a proposed monument to the Erebus disaster victims did threaten its existence. This proposal led to a rahui, a public petition, and protests, ultimately resulting in the project's cancellation and ensuring the tree's preservation.

How to Get There

To visit the giant pōhutukawa, head to Dove-Myer Robinson Park in Parnell, Auckland. The park is easily accessible from Downtown Auckland by driving or walking east along Quay Street for about 2.5 km to The Strand. Follow the Strand for 100 metres, then turn onto Gladstone Road, and the park is immediately in front of you, with adjacent car parking. As you enter the park, the tree is immediately to the east, across a strip of grass. You can also get there by bus.

Nearby, you can also explore the Parnell Rose Gardens, Judges Bay and Judges Bay Reserve, including the historic St Stephen's Chapel, with superb views of the city and harbour.
