Exploring Hawkes Lookout on Tākaka Hill

The Walk to the Lookout
The easy trail to Hawkes Lookout begins at a car park on Tākaka Hill, just as you reach the first high point driving from Golden Bay. The path winds through bush-clad limestone formations, an intriguing landscape. It's important to stay on the designated path due to the risk of hidden sinkholes, as indicated by a warning sign along the way.
Reaching the Viewpoint
At the end of the track, you will find yourself at teh top of a cliff face and 620 metres above sea level, with a stunning view that encompasses the Riwaka River valley and stretches out towards Motueka and Nelson. This viewpoint offers a remarkable perspective of the surrounding area, making the short walk well worth the effort.
Getting to Hawkes Lookout
To reach Hawkes Lookout, drive up Tākaka Hill from Golden Bay on State Highway 60. As you approach the first high point, look for the sign indicating the lookout and the car park that marks the start of the track. From Nelson, the drive is 1 hour and 60 km.
