Discover Hokitika Gorge

Hokitika Gorge, located on New Zealand's West Coast, is a striking natural attraction known for its vibrant, aqua-blue waters. Just a 30-minute drive from Hokitika, this picturesque spot is a favourite for photographers and nature enthusiasts alike. The gorge's unique colour is due to the minerals suspended in the water, creating a visual spectacle similar to that of Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki.

Exploring the Scenic Walk

The Hokitika Gorge walk is a 2 km loop that takes about an hour to complete. The trail is exceptionally beautiful, even by New Zealand standards. As you walk, you’ll have views from 40 metres above the Hokitika River and Gorge, cross two swing bridges, and meander through green native rainforest for a beautiful, immersive experience.

For the quickest access to the gorge and its main viewpoints, follow the track to the right of the car park.

How to Get There

To reach Hokitika Gorge, drive approximately 30 minutes from Hokitika via Kaniere, Kokatahi, and Kowhitirangi. The parking area is spacious, accommodating the many visitors who come to enjoy this natural wonder. For a quieter experience, consider visiting on a rainy day when the crowds are thinner.

After exploring the gorge, head to Lake Kaniere and Dorothy Falls. You can also visit Kumara and Ross, a bit further afield.
