Exploring Secluded Homunga Bay
Homunga Bay, located on the eastern coast of New Zealand's North Island, is a lesser-known, secluded and beautiful destination. In contrast to the better-known Orokawa Bay to the north, Homunga is a more remote bay, making it an ideal spot for those seeking a peaceful escape. It is a wonderful experience for those willing to take the walk.
Walking Track from Orokawa Bay
There are two options for walking to Homunga Bay. The first is to take the walking track from Waihi Beach via Orokawa Bay. This route takes you past the scenic William Wright Falls Track and requires a four-hour round trip. The walk is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the forest and spectacular coastal surroundings of the region.
Driving Route and Access Track
Alternatively, you can drive northeast from Waihi to Ngatitangata Road and a small car park with track access. From here, the walk to Homunga Bay is a steep descent that takes about 40 minutes. The path leads you through farmland and bush before arriving at the beach. This route offers a chance to experience the hilly rural landscapes of the region, with stunning views.
Once at Homunga Bay, you can also explore the track heading south towards Orokawa Bay.
How to Get There
To reach Homunga Bay, you can either take the walking track from Waihi Beach or drive from Waihi. The Waihi Beach option begins at the northern end of the beach, with car parks located at the end of Beach Road. The more direct route is from Ngatitangata Road northeast of Waihi. From Waihi, heading north on State Highway 25,, take Golden Valley Road, then turn left onto Ngatitangata Road. Continue until you reach the small parking area marked by a track access sign.
There are many other places to explore nearby. Some options include the Karangahake Reserve, Whiritoa, Bowentown Heads and Owharoa Falls.
