Historical Connections

The name Mangōnui means “big shark”, reflecting the area's strong connection to the sea and local fishing traditions. Historically, Mangōnui was an important Māori settlement and later became a bustling 19th-century whaling, flax trading, and shipping port. It briefly served as the administrative centre for the Far North in the 1800s before Kaitaia took over that role.
