Discovering Matai Falls in the Catlins
Matai Falls is located along the Southern Scenic Route, 18 km southwest of Owaka in the Catlins. The track leads to two main waterfalls on the Matai Stream and is known for its green natural beauty. It is a particularly rewarding short walk through regenerating podocarp and broadleaf forest.
Exploring the Waterfalls
The track to Matai Falls is an easy 15-minute walk each way. Matai Falls, the lower of the two main waterfalls, features a viewing platform at its base. From here, a short, steep climb takes you to Horseshoe Falls. Both waterfalls are approximately 10 metres high. Along the way, you can spot a third, smaller waterfall through the trees. The forest is home to large kōtukutuku (native fuchsia), notable for their peeling orange bark.
A Glimpse into History
Matai Falls has an interesting history tied to the Catlins Railway Line, which once connected Owaka to Tahakopa. The falls were created by quarrying rock for the railway's foundations. Today, the surrounding rainforest, rich with ferns, moss, and lichens, has reclaimed the area, masking its industrial past.
A few minutes into the track, you'll find a signposted intersection leading to a steep, short link to the Catlins Rail Trail, a walkable remnant of the railway line. Tunnel Hill is another short walkable section with a tunnel.
Catlins Rail Trail
Heading west on the track, you'll enter a culvert carved out of a rocky hillside. In wet conditions, this area is adorned with dripping water and small waterfalls, as the rainforest gradually encroaches. Several small panels along the way provide information about the rocks and their history, including fossils embedded in the rockface. If you head east, a 30-minute walk will take you to a picnic table, perfect for a rest or a snack.
