Discover Ocean Bay's Beach
Ocean Bay is a charming small bay located 19 km north of Rārangi along Port Underwood Road. Nestled just inside the entrance to Port Underwood, it features a 600-metre sandy beach. The bay has only a few houses and baches, keeping it quiet. Its relative seclusion makes it an ideal spot for a picnic, a refreshing swim, or exploring the nearby rock pools at low tide.
Limited Facilities and Access
While Ocean Bay is a beautiful destination, it offers limited facilities. There is no camping available, and public parking is scarce due to the narrow road above the beach. However, if you can find parking, the beach is easily accessible and private from the road.
Historical Significance
Ocean Bay, known to Māori as Ohienga, has a rich history of Māori occupation. In the late 1820s, Te Rauparaha took control of the bay during the Musket Wars, which then became the site of two whaling stations. By the late 1830s, the area was home to about 30 Europeans and 100 Māori, predominantly engaged in whaling, a common industry in Port Underwood at the time. For those interested in learning more, Cruise Guide provides an excellent short history of the bay.
