Exploring Oriental Bay in Wellington
Oriental Bay is a captivating coastal suburb situated on the eastern side of Lambton Harbour in Wellington. Just a short walk from the city centre and positioned below Mount Victoria, it is a favourite spot for its stunning views and lively atmosphere. Originally named Duppa after its first European resident, George Duppa, the bay was later renamed Oriental Bay after the ship, the Oriental, on which Duppa arrived in New Zealand.

The area showcases a fascinating mix of Victorian villas and modernist architecture, all set against the scenic backdrop of Mount Victoria. Oriental Bay also features a welcoming man-made beach, ideal for relaxation or a swim. A notable landmark is the historic Saint Gerard’s Catholic Church and Monastery, with its striking orange and brown brickwork, perched above the bay.
