Otama Beach, located on the Coromandel Peninsula, is a secluded golden sand surf beach perfect for those seeking a quiet getaway. Its remote location means you might have this stunning east coast beach all to yourself, a peaceful retreat away from bustling holiday towns.

A Quiet Escape

The trip to Otama Beach involves a scenic drive along Black Jack Road, with beautiful views as it winds above the coast and over Black Jack Hill. Once you descend the hill, the 2.5 km beach, backed by dunes, unfolds before you. Parking is available immediately off the road at the west end of the beach, or you can continue to the small hamlet at the far end of the beach.

Swimming and Safety

Otama Beach has no surf patrol. If you choose to swim, exercise caution, stick to an incoming tide and be mindful of the conditions.

How to get to Otama Beach

To reach Otama Beach from Whitianga, take State Highway 25 and turn off at Kuaotunu onto Black Jack Road. This road will take you over Black Jack Hill to the beach. The drive is 27 minutes and 19.4 km.

You can continue along Black Jack Road to Opito Bay, where you'll find a few more houses and another beautiful beach to enjoy. Heading west on State Highway 25 takes you to Matarangi, Whangapoua, New Chums Beach and Coromandel Town.
