Scenic Route to Pahaoa Station
Located in the South Wairarapa region, the drive to Pahaoa Station and the nearby beach access via Glendhu Station is a trip for those who enjoy venturing off the beaten path. Starting from Martinborough, this route is a remote experience through diverse landscapes, from pastoral grazing lands to native bush and river valleys.
The Journey from Martinborough
Begin your drive by heading east on Hinakura Road from Martinborough. Continue past Hinakura Hall on the short Bush Gully Road. At the end of Bush Gully Road, you reach gravel Pahaoa Road, which follows the Pahaoa River south to the coast.
The road closely follows the Pahaoa River as it meanders towards the coast, providing stunning views along the way. As you drive, the scenery shifts from open grazing lands to patches of native bush, including tī kouka and mānuka. Despite the natural surroundings, you'll still encounter cows and sheep, often standing in the middle of the road as you navigate sharp corners. The road is narrow and winding, with no markings, so it's best to travel slowly. There is a chance you will find the road entirely to yourself.
At Glendhu Road, you have the option to turn left over the bridge to Glendhu Station or continue south to reach the coast on the south side of the river mouth. As you reach Pahaoa Station, signs will remind you that dogs and guns are not permitted.
Before you begin this drive, make sure your vehicle has a full tank of petrol, as there are no service stations along the route. Cell phone reception is limited, so plan accordingly. The drive from Martimborough takes 85 minutes and is 43 km.
