Discovering Sunset Beach at Port Waikato
Sunset Beach, located at Port Waikato on the North Waikato west coast, has striking black sand and captivating sunsets. This west-facing beach is a popular destination for those seeking a classic surf experience and the chance to explore interesting rock formations at the south end and extensive dunes to the north.
Exploring the Beach and Cliffs
The beach is easily accessible from a car park situated atop an eroding cliff at the southern end. This area also serves as the base for the local surf patrol. To the left of the beach access, you'll find a rocky and stony section bordered by high yellow-orange cliffs. As the tide recedes, these rock platforms become interesting spots to explore.
Walking to the River Mouth
If you head right from the beach access, you can take a 4 km walk to the Waikato River mouth at the northern end of the beach. As you progress northward, the landscape becomes increasingly rugged. Along the way, you'll encounter impressive driftwood formations and a seabird sanctuary, home to species such as dotterels. The dunes in this area are also noteworthy; while initial access is restricted, a marked path eventually provides entry.
A Perfect Spot for Sunsets
True to its name, Sunset Beach is an ideal location to witness the sun setting over the horizon. Whether you choose to watch from the car park, the shoreline, or atop the dunes, the view is sure to be memorable.
