Exploring Puponga Point and Port Puponga
Located at the northern end of Golden Bay, Puponga Point and Port Puponga are notable for their scenic beauty and historical remnants. The area marks the end of the main highway and features a few houses alongside the remains of a wharf. At low tide, you can see the stumps of the old wharf posts, serving as a reminder of the area's industrial past. The site is particularly striking at sunset, making it a great spot for photography.
Discovering Puponga and Its Surroundings
Turning left onto the gravel Wharariki Road from the main highway will lead you to the small hamlet of Puponga. Here, the cliff to the northeast offers a dramatic view. The Puponga Hilltop Walk is a highlight, connecting Farewell Spit to Wharariki Beach via Cape Farewell. This walk runs along the top of the cliff, providing stunning vistas of the surrounding landscape.
How to get there
To reach Puponga Point and Port Puponga, follow the main highway to its northern end in Golden Bay. From there, take a left onto Wharariki Road to explore the hamlet of Puponga and its scenic surroundings. Nearby, you can also visit Farewell Spit and Wharariki Beach, both accessible via the Puponga Hilltop Walk.
