Exploring the Remutaka Lookout

Located in the Remutaka Range, between Wellington and the Wairarapa, the Remutaka Lookout is easily accessible from State Highway 2. This spot offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape, making it a worthwhile stop for those travelling the highway. From the lookout, you can see the Hutt Valley on one side and Featherston on the other, providing a panoramic perspective of the region.

A Brief Walk with a Rewarding View

The path to the Remutaka Lookout is a short but steep climb from the car park. Despite its brevity, the ascent rewards you with a high vantage point above the road. This makes it an excellent alternative if the weather is not suitable for hiking at Te Ara Tirohanga, as it requires less effort while still offering impressive views.

Historical Insights

In the car park, you will find an information board detailing the history of the road's construction. Originally, a challenging Māori trail, it was developed into a bridle path by European settlers in the mid-1800s. By the 1870s, a rough coach road was established, notorious for its steep, winding ascent and treacherous conditions in winter. The modern sealed road, still known for its hairpin bends and scenic views, follows much of the same route and is still something of a rite of passage for drivers navigating the southern North Island’s mountainous spine.

Originally named Rimutaka Road, it was recently renamed to Remutaka to reflect the correct Māori spelling.

How to Get There

To reach the Remutaka Lookout, follow State Highway 2 across the range from either direction. It is clearly signposted near Te Ara Tirohanga.

Other options for exploring the region include Akatarawa Road, Kaitoke Regional Park, the Remutaka Rail Trail and Tauherenikau Gorge Track.
