Exploring Scotts Beach on the Heaphy Track

Scotts Beach is situated at the southwestern end of the famous Heaphy Track, near Karamea. This beach is known for its striking white to gold sands, bordered by native forest and nīkau palm groves. It is the most accessible beach on the track, requiring just an hour of mostly easy walking from the Kōhaihai car park and campsite at the track's southern end.

The Walk and Camping Opportunities

The walk to Scotts Beach begins at the Kōhaihai car park, located at the southern end of the Heaphy Track. It starts with a swing bridge crossing over the Kōhaihai River, followed by a flat section adorned with stunning nīkau plants. After this, a gentle 100-metre climb through the forest leads to a breathtaking viewpoint overlooking Scotts Beach at the north end of Kōhaihai Bluff. The path then gradually descends to the beach, where a campsite is situated towards the north end. The walk is mostly easy and takes about one hour each way.

Camping overnight at Scotts Beach allows you to fully appreciate the natural beauty of the area. You can also extend your walk to explore the next two to three beaches along the track, with another campsite available at the north end of Twin Beach. However, be prepared for sandflies, which can be bothersome if you plan to linger.

How to get to Scotts Beach

To reach Scotts Beach from Karamea, drive north on gravel Kohaihai Road for 17 km, which takes about 18 minutes. The road turns to gravel about halfway along. The track is accessed from the car park at the end of the road.

While in the area, consider exploring the Nikau Walk and the Zig-Zag Track at Kōhaihai, or visit the nearby beach. On your way to Kōhaihai, you can also take a detour to the stunning Ōparara, known for its natural arches and caves set within a rainforest.
