Discover Sentinel Rock's Scenic Views
Sentinel Rock, located in the Waiho Valley in Westland, in the South Island, provides a vantage point to view the terminus of Franz Josef Glacier / Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere. This easily accessible high point is perfect for observing the glacier and the Waiho River from above.
A Glimpse into Glacial History
The short 200-metre track to Sentinel Rock begins at the south end of the main car park at the end of the access road. The trail ascends approximately 50 metres, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Information panels along the way detail the significant environmental changes in the area, highlighting the glacier's 3 km retreat over the past century.
Sentinel Rock itself emerged from the ice in 1865, shaped into a "moutonnee", a rock with a rounded, sheep's back-like form. As the glacier receded, vegetation began to flourish, with plants taking root in the post-glacial moraine and rubble.
The walk to Sentinel Rock takes just 20 minutes and can easily be combined with the Douglas Walk for a more extended exploration of the area.
Getting to Sentinel Rock
From State Highway 6, just south of the Franz Josef / Waiau township, take the access road up the Waiho Valley to the large car park at the road end. From there, follow the marked track leading to the rock.
Other walks around the valley include a short walk to Lake Wombat, the half-day hike to Roberts Point and a day tramp to Alex Knob.
