The Coastal Walk from St Leonards Beach to Takapuna Beach
Located on the North Shore of Auckland, the low-tide walk along the base of the cliffs from St Leonards Beach to Takapuna Beach is a little-known highlight of the North Shore Coastal Walk, part of Te Araroa. As you traverse this path, you'll encounter white to gold-coloured cliffs adorned with pōhutukawa trees, multicoloured and uniquely shaped rock formations, and expansive multi-tiered rock platforms.
A Quiet Escape
Despite its proximity to bustling Takapuna Beach, this 1 km stretch at the beach’s south end is surprisingly quiet. Many people overlook the rock platforms at the end of the beach, which are easy to scramble over as the tide retreats, allowing you to enjoy a peaceful walk away from the crowds. From the less busy St Leonards end, the opportunity to walk along the coast is more obvious. As the tide goes out, the sandy beach is fully exposed and lies beyond the beach’s rocky point.
The golden sands and safe swimming spots below the cliffs on the other side of the rocks make it an ideal location for a leisurely day by the sea. A small cave adds an element of exploration to your journey.
How to Get There
To begin your walk, head to St Leonards Beach on Auckland's North Shore. Once the tide is out far enough, you can easily walk from St Leonards Beach to Takapuna Beach. The route includes a picturesque bay between the two beaches. This coastal walk is a must-do for anyone exploring the North Shore, offering a blend of natural beauty and tranquillity.
