Te Mata Peak: A Geological Marvel

Located near Napier and Hastings in Hawke Bay, Te Mata Peak stands at 399 metres and is renowned for its dramatic eastern cliff and ridge line. Formed two million years ago when the sea floor rose, erosion has since sculpted the peak and its north-to-south ridges into striking formations. This geological wonder is a favourite spot for photographers, offering breathtaking views from the summit.

Cultural and Historical Significance

Te Mata Peak holds significant cultural importance for the Ngāti Kahungunu iwi, who have a long-standing connection to the area. However, their presence was severely impacted by conflicts with Waikato iwi in the 1820s.

In the early 1860s, John Chambers acquired the land for farming. His family planted a grove of 223 redwoods in 1926, with the tallest now exceeding 40 metres. The grove is on the west side of Te Mata Peak. In 1927, the Chambers family generously gifted the peak to the Te Mata Park Trust Board, which manages the surrounding Te Mata Park and provides public access.

Reaching the Summit

You can drive to the hilltop viewpoint of Te Mata Peak, which is unusual for such a spectacular location in New Zealand. Alternatively, you can hike to the summit, with several trails providing different experiences. Depending on your starting point, the return hike can take from 2 to 4 hours. Popular routes include the Rongokako Trail, which follows the main ridges, and the Big Circuit. Due to its popularity, visiting outside peak times is advisable.

Getting to Te Mata Peak

To reach Te Mata Peak from central Havelock North, take Te Mata Road east towards the north side of the peak for around 1.5 km, then turn south onto Simla Road. This road continues onto Te Mata Peak Road, a winding route that leads to the peak car park, about a 15-minute drive. The drive from Napier takes about 35 minutes.

While in the region, explore the nearby vineyards, and check out the Downtown Napier, Napier Quays, Bluff Hill and Napier's Waterfront Walkway.
