Tolaga Bay: A Coastal Gem on State Highway 35
Tolaga Bay, located on State Highway 35, the East Cape coastal road, is a must-visit destination just a 45-minute drive from Gisborne. Known for its impressive 600-metre wharf and beach, Tolaga Bay is a perfect spot for both relaxation and exploration. Walking to the end of the wharf and back takes about 30 minutes, a leisurely way to enjoy the coastal views.
Historic Tolaga Bay Wharf
Constructed in 1929, the Tolaga Bay Wharf played a crucial role in the region's history by facilitating the loading and unloading of goods from coastal trading ships. Before the road was completed, these wharves were vital access points to the outside world for the East Cape.
Today, the extensively restored Tolaga Bay Wharf is a prominent tourist attraction and a popular fishing spot. A smaller example of a similar wharf is located further north at Tokomaru Bay.
Cultural Significance and Scenic Walks
Tolaga Bay is also steeped in history, marked by the arrival of Captain James Cook and the warm reception he received from local Māori. A scenic walkway begins southeast of the wharf, tracing the cliffs to Cooks Cove, where the Endeavour once moored to replenish supplies. This area is significant for the positive interactions between Europeans and local Māori during their first contact, which contrasted sharply with encounters in Poverty Bay.
Local Amenities and Activities
In addition to its historical and natural attractions, Tolaga Bay offers beachside camping, along with a couple of shops and a café.
