Exploring the Upper Nihotupu Reservoir Walk

Located in the Waitākere Ranges in Auckland, the walk to the Upper Nihotupu Reservoir is a straightforward and scenic track. This route is ideal for those seeking a gentle hike without steep climbs. The journey begins with a brief forest walk and continues along a metal service road leading to the dam.

Scenic Highlights Along the Track

As you walk, you'll encounter a series of natural attractions. The path takes you past rapids and three waterfalls, one of which is approximately 15 to 20 metres high. The surrounding regrowth forest is visually appealing, and there are views across the reservoir. On calm days, the water's reflective surface adds to the gentle atmosphere.

Reaching the Dam and Historical Features

You can walk along the top of the dam, with spectacular views over the reservoir and the valley to the southwest. You can also continue walking for another 10 minutes beyond and below the dam to a cleared area. This spot marks where a bush tram once operated. You can follow the old tram rails to the base of the dam, adding a historical element to your walk. You may be able to climb some steep steps to the top of the dam; otherwise, return the way you came.

How to Get There

Access to the Upper Nihotupu Reservoir walk is from Piha Road, a 27 km, 33-minute drive from Downtown Auckland via the Western Motorway, Route 13 through Te Atatu South and Henderson, and the Scenic Drive. There is reasonable space for off-road car parking, but it can get very busy on weekends and public holidays.

There are many other incredible hikes nearby, including Fairy Falls, Ian Wells Track, Mercer Bay Loop and Kitekite Falls in Piha.
