Exploring Whangapoua Bay
Located on Aotea Great Barrier Island, Whangapoua Bay is a stunning destination for those seeking a blend of natural beauty and historical interest. The bay is known for its white-sand, east-coast surf beach, making it an ideal spot for beachgoers and surfers alike. A unique feature of the beach is the two shelters that resemble Pacific island structures, adding a distinctive touch to the landscape.
Discovering Historic Gravesites
A walk north along the beach leads you to a rocky point where you can find the historic gravesites of some victims of the SS Wairarapa disaster. This maritime tragedy, one of New Zealand's worst, occurred in the late 1800s. The gravesites offer a poignant glimpse into the island's past and are set in a picturesque location.
Camping at Whangapoua
For those interested in camping, there is the Whangapoua Campsite, although it is situated some distance, a km across the lagoon from the south end of the beach. However, this provides a more secluded experience for campers looking to immerse themselves in the natural surroundings.
How to get to Whangapoua Bay
To reach Whangapoua Bay, drive along Aotea Road to Okiwi. From there, turn right onto the unsealed Maybey Road and follow it to the bay. This route will bring you close to the north end of the beach. The drive is about 30 minutes from Claris and the airport.
Other beautiful bays and beaches around the island include Medlands, Kaitoke, Awana, Harataonga and Okupu / Blind Bay.
