Wharariki Beach Sand Dunes

Exploring the Dunes of Wharariki Beach

Wharariki Beach, located at the northern tip of the South Island, is renowned for its striking Archway Islands. Beyond these iconic rock formations, the beach features expansive sand dunes that are an interesting landscape for exploration. The dunes, partially covered with shrubs and grasses, create a dynamic environment shaped by the wind.

The Access Track and Sand Dunes

To reach the beach, you can take the Wharariki Beach Track, a 30-minute walk from the car park on Wharariki Road that leads through a stunning section of wind-swept sand dunes. These dunes are not only visually captivating but also offer a sense of adventure as you traverse the shifting sands. The native grasses and shrubs add a touch of greenery to the otherwise sandy terrain.

Wharariki Stream and Sand Patterns

As you follow the track, you'll find Wharariki Stream to your right. This stream crosses the eastern end of the beach, adding an attractive water feature to the landscape. When the wind blows, it sculpts intricate patterns in the sand, reminiscent of snow drifts, creating a mesmerising visual experience.

How to Get There

To visit Wharariki Beach from the town of Collingwood, take Collingwood Puponga Main Road and gravel Wharariki Road. The road ends at a car park, beside a campground, from which the access track begins.

Nearby, you can also explore other walks on Puponga Farm Park and Farewell Spit, including Cape Farewell and the Fossil Point Track to Ocean Beach and Fossil Point.
