Whitianga Rock: An Extraordinary Pā Site

Located just south of Ferry Landing at the end of Purangi Road on Whitianga Harbour in the Coromandel Peninsula, Whitianga Rock is a fascinating destination for those interested in New Zealand's history. This site was once a Māori pā associated with Ngāti Hei iwi. You can still see remnants of its past, including a large defensive ditch at the hill's base. Informative panels along the way provide insights into the area's history.

A Scenic and Adventurous Track

The track to Whitianga Rock is a short but adventurous climb up a rocky promontory with steep drops on either side. While the ascent can be daunting, especially on a first visit, it provides stunning views of Whitianga and the surrounding landscape. The path is lined with ancient pōhutukawa trees, adding to the scenic beauty. At the top, you'll notice holes drilled into the rock; these were historically used to secure pā buildings.

Be cautious when the path is wet, as it can become slippery on the Rock.

How to Get There

To reach Whitianga Rock from State Highway 25, take Hot Water Beach Road north. After 2.5 km, veer left onto Purangi Road and follow this to the Ferry Landing car park. This 13.1 km drive will take about 14 minutes.

There are several other spectacular coastal locations around the area, including Shakespeare Cliff, Lonely Bay, Cathedral Cove, Hereheretaura Point and Hot Water Beach.
