Exploring Wigmore Bay's Hidden Beauty
Wigmore Bay, located south of Te Henga Bethells Beach, is a secluded gem on New Zealand's West Coast. This modest-sized beach is framed by impressive cliffs, over 100 meters high, that take on a striking orange hue during the golden hour, making it a captivating spot for photography and relaxation.
Seclusion and Access
Wigmore Bay offers a more private experience compared to the popular Bethells Beach Te Henga. Its seclusion is partly due to its hidden location; you cannot see the bay until you navigate around Raeakiaki Point. Access to the point is only possible at low tide, adding to the beach's exclusivity.
For those seeking a quieter alternative to the bustling West Coast beaches, Wigmore Bay provides a semi-private retreat. Its relative inaccessibility ensures a peaceful environment, ideal for those looking to escape the crowds.
Getting to Wigmore Bay
To reach Wigmore Bay, walk south along Te Henga Bethells Beach from the main beach access towards the Bethells Cave and Raeakiaki Point. There is a flat rock platform around the base of the point, and you will need to cross this at low tide. It requires a mild scramble to get down from the platform to the beach at Wigmore Bay.
From Wigmore Bay, it is also a short walk to Momori Point, accessible at low tide. Another option from Te Henga is to walk north over the Waitākere River as it flows across the beach. This gets you to Waitākere Bay and O'Neill Bay.
