Discovering Army Bay in Shakespear Regional Park
Army Bay is located at the entrance of Shakespear Regional Park, one of 28 regional parks in Auckland. Situated on the park's northwest edge, the bay is named for a long-established army base to the north of the park. This scenic spot consists of a sandy beach facing north into the Hauraki Gulf, bounded by high cliffs at either end.
Exploring the Beach and Cliffs
At high tide, the waters of Army Bay reach the edge of the grassy reserve and cliffs. However, as the tide recedes, a beautiful beach emerges, inviting you to explore. You can walk west along the beach to below the cliffs, and then walk as far along the coast as you like. You will discover interesting rock formations, fishing spots and sections of sandy beach.
Walking west along the top of the cliffs, you'll encounter several mature pōhutukawa trees and enjoy stunning views of the northern coast and Kawau Island. The large cliff on the bay's eastern side is particularly striking, especially during the golden hour when it faces the setting sun.
A Photogenic Pōhutukawa
At the start of the western cliffs, a pōhutukawa tree clings tenaciously to the edge. This tree, especially at dusk, is one of the most photogenic in the Auckland region, a perfect subject for photographers.
How to get to Army Bay
To reach Army Bay, take Whangaparaoa Road from Silverdale towards the end of the peninsula. As you approach the entrance to the regional park, the beach and parking are on your left.
The park also features several walking tracks, including the Heritage Track and the Tiritiri Track, as well as a beach at Te Haruhi Bay. South of the Army Bay, you can also access the tidal flats of Ōrokomai Bay.
