Heritage Track – Forest Walk

Heritage Track at Shakespear Regional Park

Located at the entrance of Shakespear Regional Park on the Whangaparaoa Peninsula in Auckland, the Heritage Track is a lovely forest walk that showcases the area's beauty and biodiversity. This loop track is ideal for those interested in exploring native New Zealand flora, particularly the remarkable puriri trees.

A Journey Through Native Forest and Farmland

The Heritage Track is divided into two main sections. The first part takes you through native forest, which is protected by a predator-proof fence. This area features a mix of ancient puriri trees and regenerating forest, enhanced by extensive planting efforts that include kauri trees. The path is well-marked with signs to help you identify various tree species.

As you follow the gully alongside a stream, you will encounter a picturesque waterfall nestled in a large natural amphitheatre. This waterfall is most impressive after recent rain, as it tends to dry up during extended dry periods.

The second section of the track leads you across farm paddocks to the park's highest point, with panoramic views before looping back to the car park. This part of the walk provides a contrast to the forested area, highlighting the park's diverse landscapes.

The Fascinating Puriri Trees

One highlight of the Heritage Track is the presence of old puriri trees. These trees are known for their intricate, gnarled shapes, making them a fascinating sight. The track, along with the Long Bay Nature Trail at Long Bay Regional Park, is one of the best places to observe these unique trees.

How to Get There

To reach Shakespear Regional Park, head north from Auckland City on the northern motorway and take the Silverdale Exit. Follow the Twin Coast Discovery Highway east to the intersection with Whangaparaoa Road, then follow this road to the end of the peninsula. Once there, follow the signs to the Heritage Track to begin your walk.

There are several other coastal options while you are on the peninsula, including Red Beach, Stanmore Bay, Big Manly, Tindalls Beach and Army Bay. A less well-known option is to explore the cliffs around Fishermans Rock Reserve.
