Historic and Modern Architectural

The original building, constructed in 1888, is situated below Albert Park at the corner of Wellesley Street and Kitchener Street. In the 2000s, the gallery underwent an expansion, adding a striking modern facade that complements its historic architecture.

A Rich Collection of Artworks

The gallery's collection began with donations from Governor Sir George Grey and James Tannock Mackelvie. Today, it boasts over 18,000 works, including European and British art, as well as New Zealand historical and contemporary pieces. The gallery is particularly renowned for its strong representation of Māori and Pacific Island artists.
