Exploring Bruce Road and Its Volcanic Surroundings
Bruce Road is a key access route from State Highway 47, leading you up the northwest side of Mount Ruapehu to the Whakapapa Ski Field in Tongariro National Park. This road is not only shorter than the Ohakune Mountain Road but also provides more captivating views and access to intriguing volcanic rock formations.
Scenic Views and Historical Landmarks
As you travel along Bruce Road, the lower sections are bordered by scrubby bush and low forest, offering stunning views of Mount Ruapehu and the Tongariro/Ngauruhoe peaks. At the mountain's base lies Whakapapa Village, home to the historic Chateau Tongariro, a grand hotel dating back to the 1920s.
The construction of Bruce Road and the development of ski club buildings around the “Top of the Bruce” marked the beginning of skiing in the National Park.
Ascending to Iwikau Village
The road winds through a section of mountain forest before quickly ascending above the tree line. It follows a long volcanic rock ridge leading to Iwikau Village at the base of the ski field. Along the way, there are several safe stopping points where you can explore the ridge and enjoy the panoramic views. Visiting during the golden hour is particularly rewarding, as the mountain face glows with gold and red hues, unless it’s blanketed in snow.
Walking Tracks and Outdoor Activities
Bruce Road provides access to several short walks, including the easy Tawhai Falls Walk before you reach Whakapapa Village. From the village, you can take longer hikes, from the multi-day Round the Mountain Track and the 3-day Tongariro Northern Circuit, one of New Zealand's Great Walks, as well as short day walks such as Taranaki Falls and the Tama Lakes.
At Iwakau Village, a gondola ride is available, and from the top gondola station, you can hike to the summit of Ruapehu. If you decide to do this, be properly prepared and check the weather carefully, as the peak is over 2,700 metres, cold year-round, and subject to sudden weather changes. If the weather does deteriorate, head back immediately.
Getting to Bruce Road
From Auckland, the drive to Bruce Road is just over 4 hours and 340 km, with an almost identical drive time and distance from Wellington.
Nearby, you can explore other attractions such as the Tongariro Crossing, Lake Rotoaira, Lake Rotopounamu, and the Tokaanu Thermal Walk for a full range of natural experiences in the region.
