A Historic Venue in Whanganui
Cooks Gardens is a prominent athletics and cycling venue situated on the southwest side of downtown Whanganui. This location became famous in the 1960s when the kiwi runner Peter Snell set a world record for the fastest mile. The area also features a significant Art Deco commemorative entrance on Saint Hill Street, with a short path to the historic bell tower at the top of York Hill.
Development of Cooks Gardens
Cooks Gardens in Whanganui began as a public green space in the mid-19th century, originally set aside for community recreation and gatherings. Over time, its central location and open layout made it an ideal venue for sporting events, and it gradually evolved into one of New Zealand’s most iconic athletic arenas. By the early 1900s, it had developed formal facilities, subsequently modernised, and hosted a range of sports, from cycling to rugby and athletics.
Exploring the Gardens and Monuments
The park rises steeply from Saint Hill Street, naturally dividing the two stadiums. You can access the park by climbing the steps through the Art Deco entrance. At the start of the path, you will find a small plaque marking Peter Snell's achievement.
Further along, there is a monument for the soldiers from Whanganui who fought in the Boer War of the early 1900s. Continue along the short path through a small, attractive garden to the top of York Hill for a panoramic view and the historic bell tower.
The Historic Bell Tower
A historic former fire watchtower and bell tower sit on York Hill within the gardens. Built in 1891, the tower was originally used as a lookout point for spotting fires in Whanganui. The night watchman would climb it to scan the surrounding town and sound a bell if danger was spotted. Later, after the town’s old post office clock tower was taken down in the 1930s for safety reasons, its bells were installed in this tower, so the bells still ring regularly today.
The tower is one of the few structures of its kind still standing in New Zealand.
