The lake is encircled by a scenic reserve, perfect for a leisurely walk. A circuit around the lake takes about an hour, offering a chance to immerse yourself in the peaceful surroundings and observe the diverse birdlife.
Exploring the Lake
The reserve around Rotokawau Virginia Lake is predominantly filled with mature exotic trees, providing a broad canopy for your walk. Near the café and main car park, you'll encounter gardens, including an art deco-style winter garden and large pōhutukawa trees. At the far end of the lake, a picturesque area of water lilies enhances the landscape. The lake is home to various water birds, such as ducks, swans, and native pūkeko.
Throughout the reserve, you'll find several outdoor sculptures. The most notable is the Higginbottom Fountain, which shines golden in the sunlight. Other sculptures include a Peter Pan figure and a steel waka maumahara (memorial canoe).
How to get there
To reach Rotokawau Virginia Lake from central Whanganui, head north on Victoria Avenue to State Highway 3. Turn right onto the highway and continue north for 1.4 km to the car park.
