Exploring the Scenic Devils Punchbowl Falls
Located at the northern end of Arthur's Pass town, the track to Devils Punchbowl Falls is an easy and rewarding walk to a stunning waterfall. This short walk takes you through a beech forest, leading to the 131-metre waterfall. Known as one of the most impressive and accessible waterfalls in the Southern Alps, Devils Punchbowl Falls is a must-see. The final section of the track is steep but well-maintained with steps, making it manageable for most walkers.
Origins of the Name
Dropping 131 metres over hard greywacke rock, Devils Punchbowl Falls owes both its dramatic vertical form and its ominous name to the raw, untamed alpine landscape that early Europeans found awe-inspiring and intimidating. Referring to the devil in a name was common in this period in such circumstances.
The hard greywacke has slowed erosion, preserving the waterfall’s sheer plunge into a deep, churning “punchbowl” carved by millennia of falling water and stone. The falls were also linked to the early development of Arthur’s Pass, with access improved during the construction of the Otira railway route. Railway workers and early tourists were drawn to the spectacle as one of the most striking natural features near the settlement.
Conquering Avalanche Peak
Across the road from the Devils Punchbowl Falls track, you'll find one of the access points for the Avalanche Peak Track. If you're eager to conquer your first peak, this might be the challenge for you. Standing at 1,833 metres, Avalanche Peak rises 1,100 metres above the town. The trek requires most of a day, so plan accordingly and take advice from the visitor centre.
