Exploring the Waimakariri River Valley

As you travel from Arthur's Pass towards Christchurch on State Highway 73, you'll leave behind the central ranges of the Southern Alps and enter the expansive Waimakariri River valley. This area is characterised by its wide, braided river system, with multiple channels weaving through gravel flats. Despite the presence of the river, the region remains quite dry due to the rain shadow effect created by the Alps to the west.

Scenic Photography Opportunities

The road across the valley runs almost directly south, making it ideal for capturing stunning photographs in the early morning or evening light. There are numerous safe roadside viewpoints where you can stop and take in the scenery. Notable spots include the main bridge and the section of the road that ascends above the river towards Goldney Saddle.

Walking Trails and Seasonal Highlights

For those interested in exploring on foot, the valley offers several walking options. The Bealey Spur Track is particularly recommended. While visiting in summer provides a pleasant experience, a clear winter's day might offer the most breathtaking views, with the iconic snowy peaks of the South Island as a backdrop.

How to get there

To reach the Waimakariri River valley, follow State Highway 73 from Arthur's Pass towards Christchurch. The highway will guide you through the valley, providing easy access to the various viewpoints and walking tracks.

You can discover other attractions in nearby Arthur's Pass National Park. Devils Punchbowl Falls and Otira Valley Track are easy walks, while the tramp to Avalanche Peak is more challenging and requires extra care.
