Discovering Doubtful Sound

Located in Fiordland, Doubtful Sound is one of the few fiords accessible from the Southern Scenic Route. Known for its remote beauty, reaching Doubtful Sound involves a boat trip across Lake Manapouri followed by a bus journey over Wilmot Pass. This journey is part of the adventure, with stunning views and a sense of seclusion.

Exploring Doubtful Sound

To make the most of your visit to Doubtful Sound, consider booking a trip with operators based in Te Anau or Manapouri. These operators provide a range of experiences, including the option for an overnight stay on a boat. This extended trip allows you to immerse yourself in the serene environment and is highly recommended if it fits within your budget.

Why is it Doubtful?

Doubtful Sound was named “Doubtful Harbour” by Captain James Cook in 1770, as he was uncertain whether it was safe to sail into the sound. The fiord was later explored in detail in 1793 by Spanish scientists aboard the Descubierta, led by Alessandro Malaspina, who conducted extensive mapping and surveys.

Before the rise of modern adventure tourism, Doubtful Sound saw early European economic activity in the form of sealing and, to a lesser extent, whaling in the 1800s. However, both industries were short-lived due to overexploitation and the region’s remote, challenging environment.

How to Get There

To reach Doubtful Sound, start your journey at either Te Anau or Manapouri. From there, you will take a boat across Lake Manapouri. Once you reach the other side, a bus will transport you over Wilmot Pass to the sound itself.

There are other, more budget-friendly options for exploring Fordland. Drive or take a bus to Milford Sound (note that it can be very busy), walk a section of the Kepler Track, explore various tracks accessible by boat on Lake Manapouri, and discover Borland Road and its nearby tracks. Additionally, drive to Lake Hauroko for short walks.
