The Kepler Track: Luxmore Hut Day Hike
The Kepler Track, a Great Walk located near Te Anau in Fiordland National Park, is famous for its stunning alpine scenery and diverse landscapes. While it is typically a multi-day hike, you can also do a rewarding day hike to Luxmore Hut and back, perched 1,050 metres up Mount Luxmore. This hike provides superb views and a chance to experience a section of this iconic track.
Hiking Options to Luxmore Hut
For those seeking a challenge, you can start your hike at the Waiau River outlet. From here, it's a demanding trek to Luxmore Hut and back, taking approximately 6 to 8 hours. If you're looking to save time and energy, consider taking a water taxi to Brod Bay. This option allows you to bypass the initial section and begin directly with the 850-metre ascent to the mountain tussocklands around the hut. Alternatively, for a more leisurely experience, you can opt for a helicopter ride to the top and enjoy a scenic three-hour downhill walk back to the outlet.
Spectacular Views Await
No matter which option you choose, the views along the way are truly spectacular. The landscape unfolds with panoramic vistas of Fiordland's rugged terrain, a visual feast for hikers. The helicopter option, in particular, provides a unique perspective and is a popular choice for capturing stunning images of the area.
