Durie Hill: Whanganui's Premier Viewpoint

Durie Hill, located on the southeast side of the Whanganui River, is renowned for its panoramic views of Whanganui. The hill is home to the prominent Memorial Tower, a key landmark in the city.

Reaching the Summit

To reach Durie Hill from downtown Whanganui, begin by crossing the Whanganui City Bridge at the end of Victoria Avenue. Once across the river, you'll find the Durie Hill Tunnel and Elevator. This unique elevator can take you to the top of the hill, or you can choose to hike up the walkway, which involves climbing around 350 steps. Alternatively, driving to the summit is an option.

Memorial Tower and Viewing Points

At the top of Durie Hill, a small reserve features the 33-metre Memorial Tower, built over a century ago to commemorate those who served in World War I. If the viewpoint is open, you can ascend the internal staircase for a sweeping view of the surroundings. However, be aware that the tower is tagged as an earthquake risk.

For another perspective, visit the smaller orange building at the top of the elevator. By climbing its narrow, winding steps, you can reach a viewpoint that offers nearly as impressive a vista. On clear days, you might even spot both Mt Taranaki and Mt Ruapehu in the distance.

How to Get There

To visit Durie Hill from central Whanganui, head to the end of Victoria Avenue and cross the Whanganui City Bridge. Once on the other side, look for the Durie Hill Tunnel and Elevator, which will take you to the top. Alternatively, you can also drive directly to the summit via Taylor Street from State Highway 4. From Tsylor Street, turn left onto Fife Street, then immediately left onto Durie Street. You will see the tower in front of you with roadside parking.

Other attractions in Whanganui include Kowhai Park, Queens Park, Virginia Lake and Castlecliff Beach.
