Earland Falls on the Routeburn Track

Located on the famous Routeburn Track, one of the New Zealand Great Walks, Earland Falls is a stunning natural feature that can be reached as a day walk from The Divide. Standing at 174 metres, it is one of New Zealand's tallest waterfalls. Although the top of the waterfall is obscured by its concave shape, the journey to the falls is rewarding.

The Hike to Earland Falls

The hike to Earland Falls begins at The Divide and takes approximately three hours, covering 7.5 kilometres. The track initially ascends about 200 metres through native forest to reach 800 metres at the intersection with the Key Summit side trip. While the Key Summit detour is highly recommended for its views, it adds about 40 minutes to your walk.

Continuing from the intersection, the path descends gently to Lake Howden, situated at 700 metres. From there, a gradual climb along the side of the Ailsa Mountains leads you to the falls at 1,000 metres. Along the way, you'll be treated to breathtaking views of the Hollyford Valley and the Darran Mountains.

Enjoying Earland Falls

Upon reaching Earland Falls, you'll find ample space for a picnic and the opportunity to dip in the pool at the waterfall's base. The area is perfect for relaxing and taking in the natural beauty.

However, it's important to note that safe access to the falls depends on stable weather conditions. As the area is alpine, be prepared for sudden weather changes and plan your visit accordingly.

How to Get to Earland Falls

To reach the trailhead at the Divide from Te Anau, take State Highway 94 for 85 km, taking 90 minutes. As the walk is up to 3 hours each way, allow a full day for the trip.

Nearby, the walk to Key Summit is a shorter option with spectacular scenic views and a lovely natural mountain garden. Other places to visit on the drive include Lake Mistletoe, Te Anau Downs, Mirror Lakes, Eglinton Valley, Cascade Creek and Lake Gunn.
