Discover the Enchanted Lookout Track
Nestled within Marlborough's Richmond Forest Park, the Enchanted Lookout Track is a surprise gem with breathtaking views. Located off the rugged Staircase Road, this short detour rewards you with a stunning panorama of the Wairau Valley. At 1,040 metres above sea level, the lookout provides a unique vantage point over the braided Wairau River and the surrounding vineyards, farmland, and hills.
A Short Walk to Spectacular Views
The track begins at a signposted car park just two kilometres before the Lake Chalice Track car park. From here, a gentle 200-metre walk with a 40-metre climb leads you to the lookout's rocky outcrop. As you emerge from amongst wilding pines, the landscape opens up to reveal sweeping views of the valley below, approximately 900 metres down. On clear days, the distant peaks of the Kaikōura Ranges can be seen shimmering on the horizon.
Enjoy the Vantage Point
At the summit, a picnic table invites you to pause and enjoy the scenery. Whether you're stopping for lunch or simply taking in the view, the Enchanted Lookout provides a sense of remote alpine beauty.
How to Get There
To reach the Enchanted Lookout from Blenheim, take State Highway 6 west to Renwick, then north across the Wairau River bridge. Immediately after crossing the bridge, head southwest on Northbank Road to Top Valley Road. Take gravel Top Valley Road up the valley to signposted Staircase Road, then follow this as it winds steeply into Mount Richmond Forest Park. From the start of the climb, it's approximately another 30 minutes by car to the lookout turnoff. This is a forestry road and can be closed without warning. Once you arrive, the enchanting view will make the journey worthwhile. The drive takes about 80 minutes in total.
Continue on to the Lake Chalice Track and Lake Chalice, which also provides access to the wider forestry park. The road does go further, but is only appropriate for 4WD vehicles.
