Energetic Mine in Victoria Forest Park

Energetic Mine is perched high above Murray Creek within Victoria Forest Park. This site provides a fascinating look into the past, where you can observe remnants of the mining era, including rusting equipment and the collapsed deep shaft. The area is rich with historical relics, providing a tangible sense of the effort required to develop these mines in the 1860s.

Exploring the Mining Relics

As you explore Energetic Mine, you'll notice how tailings were simply discarded over the edge, a testament to the mining practices of the time. The site is scattered with remnants of mining gear, and is an opportunity to reflect on the challenges faced by miners in the 19th century.

The view over the valley carved out by the Murray Creek, 60 metres below the mine site, is also impressive. Over time, the forest has gradually reclaimed the landscape, adding a layer of natural beauty to the historical intrigue. The juxtaposition of these relics against the backdrop of the encroaching forest highlights the power of nature in reclaiming its territory.

How to Get There

To visit Energetic Mine, park your vehicle on Franklyn Street in Blacks Point, just off State Highway 7, 2 km southeast of Reefton. From there, you can access the Murray Creek Track, heading east on foot or by bike, which leads to a swing bridge over the stream. Cross the bridge, then head west above the creek towards the mine on the Tram Track. Although the track continues above the Inangahua River valley, it is presently closed beyond the mine by a slip. Check here for updates. To get to the mine and back takes about 2 hours on foot.

You can also continue on the Murray Creek Track to several more historic mining locations, including Cement Town, Murray Creek Goldmine and Ajax Golden Fleece Mine. The track can be completed as a loop, taking about 5 hours to walk.
