Blacks Point's Gold Mining Heritage
Blacks Point, located just a few kilometres from Reefton, was once a significant access point to the gold fields in the hills above the Inangahua River. This area is not only rich in history but also serves as the starting point for the Victoria Forest Park track network, an interesting destination for those interested in New Zealand's gold mining past.
Explore the Local Museum
Adjacent to the parking area at Blacks Point is a small museum that offers a glimpse into the lifestyle and values of the past. This museum is an excellent stop for anyone curious about the local history and the gold mining era. It provides insights into how people lived and worked during the gold rush.
Visit the Stamping Battery
Above the museum, you will find additional parking near an old, operational stamping battery. To see it in action, you can ask the museum keeper to open it up and turn it on. This experience provides a tangible connection to the gold mining days. The area around the battery is dotted with various pieces of equipment from the gold mining era, adding to the historical atmosphere.
How to Get There
To reach Blacks Point, drive a few kilometres east from Reefton along State Highway 7.
If you're interested in exploring more of the region, walk or bike from the car park into the Victoria Forest Park on the Murray Creek Track. This takes you to several old gold mine sites, the first being the Energetic Mine.
