Discovering the Eskdale Reserve Network

Situated in Birkenhead on the North Shore of Auckland, the Eskdale Reserve Network covers 4 hectares of interconnected forest reserves. Managed by the Kaipātiki Project, this area is known for its diverse natural landscape, featuring both mature kauri forests and areas of regrowth. Stretching from the central Birkenhead Domain to the Waitematā Harbour, it offers a scenic retreat with a variety of walking tracks.

Walking Tracks and Entrances

The Eskdale Reserve Network includes several walking tracks that meander through the forested areas. A main track runs along the Kaipātiki Creek to the coast.

You can enter Birkenhead Domain from Domain Road, Glenfield Road, and Eskdale Road on the east side. Hiwihau Scenic Reserve, located in the middle of the network, is accessible from Hiwihau Place, while Eskdale Reserve can be reached from Eskdale Road and Brunton Place. For coastal access, head to Francis Kendall Reserve via Kaipātiki Road.

Natural Features and Attractions

The forests within the network vary from regrowth areas to mature stands, including kauri trees. Walking the entire network from end to end spans about 2.5 km, with various loop options providing different forest experiences. Near the Eskdale Road entrance, you will find a modest waterfall, while the nearby Pā Harakeke project is a local conservation effort.

How to Get There

To visit the Eskdale Reserve Network from Downtown Auckland, take the northern motorway to the Onewa Road off-ramp. Follow Onewa Road west to Highbury, then turn north onto Glenfield Road. The reserve will appear on the left side of the road. Continue to the intersection with Domain Road for easy parking and access.

In the southwest corner of North Shore, you can also explore other remarkable forest parks such as Chatswood Reserve, known for its impressive kauri trees, Kauri Point Centennial Park, Le Roys Reserve, and Kauri Glen Reserve.
