Gibbs Farm: A Sculptural Haven on Kaipara Harbour
Located just 47 km north of Downtown Auckland, Gibbs Farm is a remarkable artistic destination on the shores of the Kaipara Harbour. This expansive 400-hectare property features a stunning collection of large-scale outdoor sculptures. Established by Alan Gibbs, the farm provides a unique opportunity to experience monumental artworks set against the dramatic backdrop of the Kaipara landscape.
A Unique Open-Air Gallery
Gibbs Farm is not a conventional sculpture garden. Purchased in 1991, the property has been transformed into an open-air gallery where art and nature coexist. Many of the artworks are commissioned specifically for this site, with artists encouraged to integrate the landscape into their creations.
The farm's setting is striking, with the Kaipara Harbour, the largest harbour in the Southern Hemisphere, forming its western boundary. The property features small lakes and rolling grass-covered hills that lead to the harbour. The ever-changing tides and weather patterns add a dynamic element to the experience.
Sculptures and Exotic Animals
The collection at Gibbs Farm includes works by both international and New Zealand artists. You can admire pieces by around 30 artists, each offering visionary masterpieces. Notable installations include Bernar Venet's 88.5° ARC x 8, Richard Serra's Te Tuhirangi Contour, Neil Dawson's Horizons, and Gerry Judah's Jacob's Ladder. These sculptures are among the largest, and some can be seen from the main highway as you pass the farm.
One of the lakes features a captivating series of oscillating fountains. Additionally, the farm is home to exotic animals, including emus, giraffes, and rare sheep breeds. Feeding a giraffe is a fun experience!
Planning Your Visit
Visiting Gibbs Farm requires advance planning. It is not generally open to the public, but you can book a visit through their website here. Invitations are issued for open days, which typically occur once a month.
The farm also welcomes artists, educational institutions, and charities. There is no entry fee. Be prepared for a walking adventure across open farmland and well-maintained paths. Comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are essential. Bring your own food and water, although food trucks may be available during your visit.
Exploring the Farm
Allocate at least half a day, including time for a picnic, to explore the farm. Consider bringing a knapsack to carry your picnic supplies as you find the perfect spot among the 400 hectares.
How to Get There
Gibbs Farm is approximately an hour's drive from Downtown Auckland. Take the Western Motorway (State Highway 16) from the city and continue along SH16, the Kaipara Coast Highway, through Kumeu and Helensville. Look for signs directing you to Gibbs Farm.
Nearby, you can also stop at the beautiful Omeru Reserve, which includes the Waitngi Falls and Omeru Falls.
