Exploring Lake Rotoroa in Hamilton

Lake Rotoroa, also known as Hamilton Lake, is located on the southwest side of central Hamilton, just three blocks from the south end of Victoria Street and the nearby Waikato River. This shallow lake is a popular destination for both locals and visitors, with a scenic walking track that, along with a loop road, encircles the lake. The area is perfect for leisurely strolls, picnics, and enjoying the natural surroundings.

Activities and Amenities

A walk around Lake Rotoroa takes approximately 50 minutes, making it a favourite activity for many locals. The lake is surrounded by parkland areas on its eastern and western sides, providing ample space to relax. Mature trees offer shade, creating ideal spots for picnics. On the southeast side, near the main entrance off Ruakiwi Road, you'll find a rose garden, playground, and café, adding to the lake's appeal.

Events at Lake Domain

Lake Domain is also the venue for the annual Balloons over Waikato event, held in March. This hot air ballooning event attracts visitors from all over, adding a vibrant atmosphere to the area.

How to get there

From central Hamilton, take one of several streets, Ward Street, Collingwood Street or Hood Street onto Tbhackery Street, which head southwest from Victoria Street to Ruakiwi Road. From there, you can walk directly into the reserve, or head southeast on Ruakiwi Road to the main entrance at the southeast end of the lake.
