Discovering Little Akaloa Bay

Little Akaloa Bay is located almost directly north of Akaroa Harbour on Banks Peninsula. This bay is a charming destination with a rich history dating back to the 1840s and 1850s when Europeans first settled in the area. They cleared the ancient forests to establish farms, and for a time, a sawmill accelerated this transformation. Today, Little Akaloa Bay is a peaceful retreat with a small beach and a quaint hamlet of houses and holiday homes.

Exploring the Beach and Surroundings

The beach at Little Akaloa Bay is smaller than nearby Le Bons Bay and Okains Bay, measuring just 300 metres in width. While some areas are stonier, the east side of the beach is ideal for swimming, especially near the access stairs and rustic changing shed. The west end of the beach features several large old trees, providing shade for picnic tables, making it a pleasant spot for a leisurely day by the sea.

The name Akaloa is a transliteration of Akaroa, which means “long harbour”. European’s who named this compact bay were obviously doubly confused!

How to Get There

To reach Little Akaloa, you have a couple of options. From Okains Bay, take Chorlton Road, which provides scenic views of Stony Bay and Raupo Bay. Alternatively, if you're coming from Akaroa, head north on State Highway 75, then take Okains Bay Road to Summit Road. Head north on Summit Road for about 7 km before turning right onto Little Akaloa Road. Follow this to the car park next to the beach. The drive is 24 km and takes 24 minutes. From Christchurch, the drive is 80 km and takes 1.5 hours.

Other options around Summit Road include Hinewai Reserve, the Okains Bay Museum, and the Ōtepātotu Track.
