Banks Peninsula, located east of Christchurch in the South Island, is home to two remarkable roads named Summit Road. One of these roads encircles the crater rim on the north side of Akaroa Harbour, providing a scenic route to Akaroa. This drive is not only a journey through stunning landscapes but also a gateway to various bays and walking tracks.

Scenic Drive to Akaroa

Summit Road, Akaroa, is accessible from State Highway 75, just after Hilltop. This sealed road stretches for about 26 km and takes approximately 40 minutes to drive. As you wind around the crater rim, you'll be treated to breathtaking views of Akaroa Harbour. The elevation ranges from 400 to over 600 metres for mostly open vistas across the harbour and glimpses of the peninsula's northeast coast.

The road ends at the intersection with Long Bay Road and Brocheries Road. Head east down Long Bay Road to State Highway 75, then turn south for the short drive to Akaroa.

Access to Bays and Walking Tracks

In addition to its scenic beauty, Summit Road provides access to several bays on the peninsula's east and northeast coasts. These include Le Bons, Okains, Little Akaloa, and Pigeon Bay. For those interested in hiking, the road also leads to several superb walking tracks, such as the Ōtepātotu Reserve, and to Hinewai Reserve.

Photo Opportunities

While the roadside verges are mostly narrow, there are several spots along the drive where you can safely pull over to capture photos of the stunning landscape. These opportunities make the drive even more rewarding, allowing you to take in the panoramic views at your own pace.

Getting to Summit Road

To reach Summit Road, Akaroa, from Christchurch, head towards Akaroa on State Highway 75. After passing Hilltop, look for the signposted turn-off to Summit Road. The drive to Hiiltop takes 65 minutes and is 64 km.
