Exploring Lizard Bay
Lizard Bay, also known as Lizzie, is a tranquil spot located about 15 minutes walk from Opito Bay in the Bay of Islands. This secluded bay is ideal for those seeking a peaceful swimming experience away from the busier Opito Bay. Its location on Te Puna Inlet provides a sheltered environment, making it a safe swimming choice.
A Scenic and Secluded Beach
The bay features a short, pebbled beach that offers views northeast towards the southern tip of the Purerua Peninsula. The surrounding regenerating native forest and shrubs extend to the edge of the beach, providing a natural windbreak.
To reach Lizard Bay, start at the east end of Opito Bay and look for the Akeake Point Historic Reserve Track sign. The track climbs 60 metres up steps to the ridgeline, passing between a couple of houses and through regenerating native forest. From the ridge, a short, steep track leads down to Lizard Bay.
How to Get There
From Kerikeri, the 15.6 km drive takes about 20 minutes on a sealed road. To get there, head north from Kerikeri on Landing Road, continue onto Kapiro Road, then follow Redcliffs Road to Rangitane Road and finally Opito Bay Road. Park at the north end of the beach and walk to the end of the beach access road to find the track entrance.
You can also visit Akeake Point Historic Reserve on the same track. In Kerikeri, you can explore the Kerikeri Basin, walk the Kerikeri River Walk to Rainbow Falls and discover Charlies Rock and Te Wairere Falls.
